Outdoor Twister

If Twister is a family game-night favorite, your kids will love playing Twister outside in the summertime. Encourage your children to spend time outside as opposed to in front of a screen with this “twist” on the classic game. Anyone can play – not to mention, outdoor Twister is fairly simple to recreate and won’t break your budget in terms of supplies. You can give it a try at your next summer birthday party or outdoor family get-together.

Supplies

In order to recreate a Twister game board on your lawn, you will need spray paint. If you already own the game, you might want to stick with the traditional Twister colors (red, blue, yellow, and green) as you can reuse the spinner. If you’re up for making your own game spinner you can choose colors as you please. If you decide to make your own spinner, you can print off a template online. You will need sheets of poster paper or Bristol board and a marker to draw templates. You should have a pair of scissors on hand to cut out the templates.

Use a small, round plate or bowl to trace a large circle on one piece of poster paper. Then place the plate in the position where you think the next circle will go. It’s okay if the plate is mostly off the page. Do this for both sides, so that you can see the approximate amount of space between circles. Trace another circle on another piece of poster paper. Cut out all of the circles and half-circles you’ve traced so that you have a template. Outside, build a grid of circles two at a time. Complete one row of colors first, then move on to the other colors beside it. If the circles are smaller, you can make up to five or six rows, but keep in mind that people will have to reach from one row to another and your spinner must include all possible colors and limb combinations.

If you don’t have a spinner on hand but don’t have the time to re-create one, don’t worry. You can use the remaining spray paint and scraps of poster paper to ensure that your outdoor Twister game still relies on chance. Cut out squares of cardboard paper until you have a total of four squares for each color on your outdoor Twister board. For instance, if you have four colors on the board you will need a total of sixteen small poster paper squares. Spray paint four squares for each color. Once the paint has dried, you can draw or paint in the corresponding hand or foot. Keep in mind that for each color, you should have a left and right foot and a left and right hand. You can use “L” and “R” to indicate left or right. Place the completed chips in a small bowl or hat and allow kids to pick them out to play the game instead of spinning.
