Cool Whip Painting

You may be familiar with Cool Whip in the kitchen, but what about using Cool Whip for crafts? If you have small children, you might be surprised to learn that cool whip actually makes great paint! The benefit is that you don’t have to worry about your kids putting the paint in their mouths. It tastes delicious and can be used by kids to make art – what more could a parent ask for?

Supplies

You don’t need much to do this activity in the way of supplies. The “paint” is made by mixing cool whip and food coloring. You can use small plastic or Styrofoam cups for individual colors. Alternatively, create a pallet for paint using a muffin tray. The more colors you make, the better. Finally, your kids will need something to paint – blank paper or cardboard will do if you don’t have anything else on hand – and paintbrushes. Once you’ve gathered your supplies, you’re ready to start painting.

Separate the Cool Whip into cups or sections of the muffin tray. One or two drops of food coloring should suffice to create the colors. If you want more intense colors, add more food coloring. Stir the Cool Whip until the color is spread evenly throughout. You will need to set up an area where your little one can paint. This can be a messy activity, especially if you’re child is young. If it’s summer, try working outside. If not, make sure that you cover the painting area with newspapers. If you don’t have a small table for your little one, try making a table from a large cardboard box. Once the space is ready, all you have to do is hand your little artist the paintbrush and let him or her go wild.

Fun Ideas

If you want to do away with the brushes altogether, a fun variation of Cool Whip painting is simply finger painting. No need to worry about paints getting everywhere – they are easily washed off. If you want to help your child make shapes, try using stencils or cookie cutters. Another fun idea is to have kids paint on one side of the paper and fold it over to see the impression. Since Cool Whip tends to go on thick you can create a lovely symmetrical design using a variety of colors. Cool Whip make take a while to dry and harden, so be sure to set your kid’s artwork out of reach so that the paint doesn’t end up all over the house.
